Evolution Korea

In the past the Korean scientific community was hesitant about engaging with the creationists out of fear of giving the movement more credence. Silence is no longer an alternative.

The STR has been campaigning to remove content from textbooks that explain evolution, such as the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an early bird's ancestor. This is just one aspect of how the concept of development has changed.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a theory of science that explains the change in the genetic traits of living organisms over time. The theory is based on the fact that living things adapt to their environment which can result in changes in genes or even whole genomes. Over time these changes could lead to the emergence new species. Natural selection is the dominant theory of evolution. It describes how individuals who have advantages can reproduce faster and longer than those with disadvantageous ones. As time passes, this difference in reproduction could result in the creation of completely new species.

The term "evolution" is derived from Latin for revealing or unrolling has been used in a variety of different ways as the concept has developed, both in science as well as elsewhere. Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to change into another species. Etienne Geoffroy St.Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist student who came up with the term "transmutation" to describe this theory. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, criticized the concept of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy's student.

Recently evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living things develop characteristics that improve their chances of survival or ability to produce offspring. Over time, genetic variability can lead a population to acquire new physical traits or biological functions. Natural selection is the main force behind most evolutionary changes. Changes that are not genetic, like an increase in muscle mass through exercise or diet, can't be considered evolution because they don't pass on to the next generation.

Despite the fact that evolution has stood the test of time and thousands of scientific tests however, creationists have taken advantage of the notion that the theory is controversial and argue that it shouldn't be taught in school. In South Korea, creationists have won a few victories in their efforts to eliminate evolution from high school textbooks which includes the removal of any references to the evolutionary roots of humans, as well as the Archaeopteryx feathered dinosaur believed to be an ancestor of birds.

Why is Evolution important to humanity?

Evolution explains how the Earth and all living creatures came into existence. It is also a foundation of biology that helps scientists comprehend how living organisms operate and develop. Evolution also shows how various species are interconnected. Scientists study evolution to better comprehend nature and make valuable discoveries, such as the development of new treatments.

The evidence for evolution is overwhelming. No other scientific theory can explain as much about the universe and the life on earth. It has been thoroughly examined and confirmed for many years. Many people, including religious leaders, believe in the scientific theory of evolution. It is essential to remember that evolutionary biology does not contradict religious beliefs because it only deals with physical objects, events, and processes.

Many religious people have come up with a way of reconciling evolution with their convictions. Some Christians for instance believe that God created everything through evolution and that humans share an ancestry that is shared with other animals.

It is essential for scientists to advocate for the teaching of evolution. Unfortunately, in a few countries around the globe the anti-evolution movement is growing. In the United States, efforts to limit the teaching of evolution have made some progress in a few states. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) which is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research is pushing for the removal of textbook content on the evolution of horses and the bird ancestor Archaeopteryx.

It is important to remember, however, that the evidence in support of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a broad variety of sources, including fossils, genetic studies and the behavior of living organisms. Other scientists independently confirm the evidence.

The majority of scientists agree with the theory of evolution. The reasons behind this support vary. Some scientists study evolution to make practical discoveries that can lead to the development of new treatments and other treatments, while others are driven by a desire to improve animal and plant species, usually to benefit humans. Some scientists are simply curious, while others have an intense belief in God.

What is Creationism?

Creationists are people who believe that God created the universe and everything within it. They also believe that the Bible is God's word and should be believed to be true. Many creationists are Christians however, not all. Creationists typically fall into two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).

The YECs are perhaps the most well known type of creationist, and they believe that God created the universe exactly as described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of the first six days of creation was true and that the universe and life on Earth were only created recently.

OECs are less well known, but they are as enthusiastic about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe and all life on Earth are billions of years old and they believe that evolution is an untruth.

Both forms of creationism reject the notion that scientific theories such as natural selection and abiogenesis could explain the origin of life on Earth. They assert that evolution is impossible, because it would require miracles. The pioneers of modern scientific thought shunned miracles out of fear they might lose their credibility.

Some creationists believe in both naturalistic evolution and special creation, and call their view "theistic evolution." It is sometimes known as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from created kinds." The theory suggests that God creates original species and then allows them to change over time. These evolutionary changes will eventually produce new species that are similar to the original.

Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in a single event called the Great Flood. They believe that the first species were all created at the same time and that they evolved slowly afterward. They also reject the idea of abiogenesis, and argue that the creation of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is not possible.

In general, creationists are against teaching of evolution in schools. Numerous professional organizations, like the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education are in support of this view, as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. However, some academic institutions and scientists are more flexible and allow for the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curriculum.

What is Creationism?

When people think of the concept of creationism typically think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolution group. The publishers of textbooks for high school students have recently announced that they will eliminate references to evolution from their textbooks. A group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research which is the driving force behind the campaign. The STR has won its first victory by removing from textbooks examples of the evolution and ancestor of the bird, the Archeopteryx. The next goal is to eliminate excerpts from Darwin’s infamous finch-research as well as on human evolution.

STR claims that it has the support of 4,000 families and individuals. Its aim is to root out what it believes is the "atheist materialism" that creates a bleak worldview for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American creationists who live in the US. A survey of biology students teachers found that about half do not believe in evolution. The causes are not evident, but they could be due to religious beliefs or the lack of creation scientists in the US.

The KACR accomplished a number of things through its lectures and seminars in the past. It publishes a bimonthly journal called Creation and an ebook. One of them is a textbook on the natural sciences, with an evolutionary perspective that has sparked interest among college students. In 1991 the year 1991, a minister and professor started teaching Creation Science in one university, and it continues to be taught to this day.

On August 6th and 7th of 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. This was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from abroad, including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin addressed an audience of several thousand. KACR and its members have been giving talks on creation science at major seminaries too. KACR is planning to create a Creation Science Education Center.
